Barn doors perfect fit for dynamic renovating duo

We’re constantly blown away by the amazing way our customers use Hume products. There’s so many talented DIYers and design gurus, who use even our most humble doors to create works of art!

The latest Hume success story that caught our eye comes from Mr and Mrs Pugh, a dynamic DIY duo who have been working on their renovation since January this year.

We first heard from Katrina and her husband, Jesse, through a tag on Instagram. Their account took us on a journey from the original 50s-style brick dwelling they purchased earlier this year to the fresh, chic home they’re putting a lot of hard work into.

“We just love all things building, renovation and design,” Katrina said. “We have completed two owner-builds before, so a renovation was just something we were keen to do next,” she continued.

However, the pair found this renovation was slowed slightly by their living in-house and the responsibilities that come with being the parents of an 18-month-old. Even still, the Pugh’s have produced impressive results in a short period.

“We picked two products from the Frontier Barn Doors range in PRE11,” Katrina said. “We painted the living room door light grey and loved it so we continued the Premium range style into the master,” she explained. While the design of the door kept the home’s style consistent, the functionality behind the product was the feature that most intrigued Katrina.

Katrina and Jesse needed a door that would close off the ensuite from their bedroom, but ran into problems with most products due to the way the bathroom was laid out. The ensuite is small, so a normal swing door was out of the question.

Katrina considered a Cavity Unit – a great space saving product – but decided it wouldn’t work either. “To the right of the doorway is a shower and we wanted the mixer to be on that wall. We needed to make sure the door wouldn’t occupy that wall cavity where the shower’s plumbing would run through,” she explained.

After coming across Hume’s range of barn doors in a brochure from a local hardware store, Katrina knew she’d found the answer to her problem.

“It was a win-win solution,” she said. “Using a barn door allowed us to forgo the cavity slider and maintain the use of our shower wall with plumbing inside it. It also gives an otherwise plain room a point of interest!”

The duo placed a special order at their local Home Timber & Hardware, one of our many distributors, and a few weeks later they received a call to pick up their new door.

“It was easy enough to collect, fit inside our van with no problems at all,” Katrina recalled. Now that they’d picked up the door, she and Jesse could begin the exciting process of styling and installation.

Dulux Mornington Half, a gentle pink, tied the door in with the master bedroom’s soft colour scheme. “The hubby was resistant to the pink but is surprised by how much he likes it.”

The door hardware, a bold black handle to match the statement running track, was sourced online and the door was ready to be installed.

“Jesse is a carpenter by trade, so we often find it easy to accomplish DIY projects with little help from outside contractors. We installed this on our own and it didn’t require much time or effort at all”.

“We’re so happy with our new barn doors,” the Pugh’s told Hume. “We’d definitely recommend the wonderful range.”
