Renovating rookies use Hume in their family home

We often hear of happy customers who have used Hume Doors in their homes. We’re always interested to learn their story and the Nicholson family was no different.

We first discovered the family via a tag on their Instagram – @ourcottagebythebasin. We checked out their account and saw a number of Hume Doors & Timber products, so we chatted with the husband and wife duo behind the account, Craig and Siobhan.

While they’d made a few minor adjustments to the old home in Queensland, this renovation was the Nicholson family’s first major home improvement project. They moved to the NSW South Coast after Craig inherited his grandfather’s cottage.

“It was built 70 years ago and has had family live there intermittently ever since,” Siobhan said. “We were so lucky to have it gifted to us. So, while we wanted to bring it into the 21st century, we were firm on keeping the old-school chic and staying true to the legacy we’d be given.”

The in-laws (who also happened to be neighbours to the cottage) offered to house Craig and Siobhan while they undertook the renovation.

“It took just over two years to sort everything out. I started a new job, had a baby, did renos and we were able to move in,” Siobhan recalled.

We find a lot of Hume Doors customers hear about us through a builder or contractor – Siobhan took out the middle man and did some research for herself.

“I work in the building industry, so I know the Hume brand well. When it came to deciding on doors for our new home, we wanted a cost-effective option that wouldn’t skimp on quality,” she said. “I was still on the fence until I saw the doors in action. We had used Hume on a recent project, and I loved the doors so much I chose them for our place!”

The HAM1 of the Hamptons range caught Siobhan’s eye – and we can see why. The quaint, coastal design is perfect for her water-front home and the clean lines of this shaker-style door are a simple way to add style to any room. Craig and Siobhan had three of the internal doors installed in the home’s bedrooms.

“We had builders install all our doors and frames for us. But we have no doubt a DIYer could do it – perhaps one who doesn’t have a little one to watch out for,” Siobhan joked.

The couple dressed both the internal and external doors with beautiful black matte handles from one of our distributors, Bunnings, and coated them with paint by Taubmans.

“We picked Snow Drop, a gentle off-white, for the interior doors and added a pop of colour to the front door – the XS2 from Hume’s Savoy820 range – with Seaway half strength.”

“It’s pretty amazing that we’re raising our family in a home built by Craig’s grandfather. We were able to keep the original floorboards after a good sand and stain and with our new doors it truly feels like home,” Siobhan concluded.
